Vimshottari Dasha

In Vedic Astrology, the Dasha Period of a planet influences the individual either positively or negatively based on the planet's dignity in the birth chart. If the planet is considered malefic in the native's Janam Kundali, its Dasha period is believed to bring unfavourable outcomes. Conversely, if the planet is considered benefic, the Dasha period is expected to be favorable.

Maharishi Parashar, the author of the Brihat Parasara Hora Shastra, one of the most authoritative texts on Vedic Astrology, describes various types of planetary Dasha periods. The sage explains Dashas such as Ashtottari, Shodsottari, Panchottari, etc., emphasising that the Vimshottari Dasha is the most suitable for the people in the Kaliyuga era. He affirms that the Vimshottari Dasha spans 120 years, aligning with the expected lifespan of people in the Kaliyuga period, which makes it the best one to use for the current era.

The Mahadasha represents the major period of a planet, with each planet having its specified duration. This Mahadasha can be broken down into Antardasha, further into Pratyantardasha, and so forth. The Mahadasha of Moon lasts for 10 years, the Sun's for 6, Mercury's for 17, Venus's for 20, Mars's for 7, Jupiter's for 16, Saturn's for 19, Rahu's for 18, and Ketu's for 7 years. When combined together, these periods total 120 years.

By meticulously examining an individual's horoscope and the Vimshottari Dasha, an astrologer can offer predictions and insights into momentous events that are likely to unfold during the native's lifetime. This foresight allows the individual to prepare for the upcoming events, be they positive or negative, and navigate through their life with a better understanding of the potential challenges and opportunities that lie ahead.

How is Vimshottari Dasha Calculated?

For manually calculating, Vimoshattari Dasha system takes a person's name, gender, date of birth, place, and time of birth and then checks back to what part of the Mahadasha cycle they were born in.

After that, the Vimshottari Dasha calculator predicts the passage of planets whose dasha the person will experience in a systematic order. It is spread over a span of 120 years, as that is probably the maximum time period a human can survive.

The starting Dasha of any person will depend on the position of Moon's Star at the time of birth.

  • Moon’s Position and Nakshatra: The starting point of a Maha Dasha is known from the Moon Nakshatra, i.e. the constellation in which the Moon stayed during the time of your birth.

  • Ruling Planet Lord of the Moon Nakshatra: The Ruling Planet of the Nakshatra where your Moon is positioned during your birth is the first Maha Dasha you experience. Likewise, other planets’ Maha Dasha follow, one by one, in sequence.

  • The Fixed Time period of each Maha Dasha: Depending on the duration of the first Maha Dasha, the time period of all planets’ Maha Dasha was counted. Astrology researchers saw that each planet came with a fixed time period every time.

  • The 3 Nakshatra Rule: The fixed time period of each Maha Dasha is calculated with a 3 Nakshatra Rule. Three nakshatras are always simultaneously surrounding a particular planet whose Dasha is going on.

The Vimshottari Dasha period, as we saw, is divided into 9 Maha Dasha periods, each of which is ruled by a particular planet as per Vedic astrology. These are the seven traditional planets and the North and South intersecting nodes of the Moon's orbit.

The Cycle of Vimshottari Mahadasha

Vimshottari Dasha calculator counts the cyclic occurrence of Maha Dasha; hence, there is a fixed sequence of planets, each of which will have a dominant effect on an individual, one after the other. This order is in the following pattern:

Ketu -> Venus -> Sun -> Moon -> Mars -> Rahu -> Jupiter -> Saturn -> Mercury

Apart from this, there are sub-periods of nine planets for each Major Dasha (Maha Dasha). The impact of a particular planet’s Maha Dasha also depends on its combination with these periods.

The Vimshottari Dasha prediction free must be seen in the following sequence:

Maha Dasha -> Antar Dasha -> Pratyantar Dasha -> Sookshma Dasha -> Praana Dasha -> Deha Dasha

Each of the periods mentioned above has a cycle of the nine planets. It is Maha Dasha Antar Dasha and Pratyantar Dasha mainly, and then the rest, which has a very little impact on the overall Maha Dasha. All are explained below.

Vimshottari Dasha and Its Results

In Vimshottari Dasha, a rule has been described to know the results of planets Mahadasha. The auspicious and inauspicious effects of planets can be determined through the Lagna Sign. The planets are auspicious for one Lagna whereas the same planet is inauspicious for different Lagnas. Therefore, the result vary from Lagna to Lagna.

For example: For Aries Lagna, Saturn is auspicious planet, For Taurus Lagna, again Saturn is auspicious planet and also a Yog Karak Planet in one's Kundali. For Virgo Sign Lagna, Mercury is auspicious and natural benefic planet, likewise for Cancer Lagna, Mars becomes beneficial planet. We can understand now how different planets are beneficial for different Lagna.

We need to also check the strength of Lagna as well as benefic planet, the reason being, it will decide the full and partial results of particular planet. If it is afflicted then the full results during the Mahadasha of particular benefic planet won't be experienced. If it is placed well in horoscope, it will bless a person with all kinds of comforts especially during the Mahadasha.

Combined Effects of Mahadasha and Sub Dasha planets Lord

While analyzing to a birth chart, a first thought, came into mind, is that the person's life would be influenced much by the Main Mahadasha Lord or a person would be experiencing the results of Antardasha Lord upto maximum extent. Hence in this situation, it is assumed that which planet would have the maximum strength in Kundali, will be the most effective and influencing much during the Mahadasha of certain planet. The result will be based on the stronger planet. If Mahadasha planet is strong, then it will force to Antardasha planet to give results accordingly or if Antardasha planet is strong, will influence Mahadasha planet to give results accordingly.

Therefore, Vimshottari Dasha is a period of time which influences human life in a positive or negative way depending upon the stronger lordships of certain Mahadasha Planet. It plays very prominent role in Vedic Astrology due to its accuracy for predicting the time for happening of certain event.
